The golden donkey farm
The golden donkey farm is located in the village of Skarinou which is between Limassol and Larnaca. This little place is a great stop for families, children and adults alike will enjoy it. The farm holds about 200 donkeys making it one of the largest in Cyprus (you wont see that many though when you visit). We encorporated this stop as part of our mountains tour as a break for Jacob to run arround and burn off some energy and it worked out perfectly. We spent about an hour here so Jacob could enjoy the nature and the donkeys as well as play on the slides and stretch his legs. We get the thumbs up from him for sure. 😉
As well as the baby donkeys there are adult donkeys and a wax museum to display a little of the history and a traditional farm house.
The donkeys were a large part of cyprus history, they were the main transportation method of getting around cyprus for centuaries. They were used to transport food and wine as well as helping produce olive oil and moving boulders. The donkies were also used to assist winaries in carrying the grapes.
There are lots of different types of trees which my son liked exploring, including a really old olive tree.
When you leave you can sample products made from the donkeys, donkey milk, chocolate, olive oil etc and you can purchase things too.
There is plenty of parking and entrance is 4 euros for an adult and 2 euros per child (babies are free). The opening hours are between 9.30 and 18.00 during April to October and 09.00 – 17.00 November to March.
